Width and landings are the requirements that decide whether a ramp is usable once you are actually on it, and they consume far more of the yard than most people expect.

Clear Width Is Measured Between the Handrails

The ADA standard specifies a clear width of 36 inches minimum for a ramp run, and the word clear is doing real work. The measurement is taken between the handrails, so the structure itself has to be wider than 36 inches to deliver it once rails, posts, and curbs are installed.

This is the single most common ordering mistake with modular ramps. A ramp sold as 36 inches wide may measure 36 inches across the deck, leaving less than that once the rails are on. Check what the manufacturer means by width before comparing two products.

Why 36 Inches

Thirty-six inches accommodates a wheelchair plus the space the user’s hands need on the pushrims, and it leaves room to correct a line without a wheel finding the edge. Anything narrower forces a straight line, and a straight line is difficult to hold on a slope with a cross wind or an uneven surface.


Landings Do Three Different Jobs

The ADA standard requires a landing at the top and bottom of every ramp run, 60 inches long minimum and at least as wide as the run leading into it. The 60 inches is a resting length: it gives a person room to stop with the whole chair on a level surface rather than balanced half on the slope.

A ramp that runs straight onto a sloping driveway has no bottom landing, and the transition from a 1:12 slope onto a driveway pitch is where front casters catch. If the ground at the base is not level, the landing has to be built rather than assumed.


Doors, the Thing That Ruins Otherwise Good Plans

A ramp usually ends at a door, and doors have their own space requirements. The ADA standard sets a clear opening width of 32 inches minimum for doorways and specifies maneuvering clearances on the approach side, including additional space beside the latch so a seated person can reach the handle and pull the door past themselves.

The standard does allow those maneuvering clearances to overlap the required landing area, which helps, but it does not remove the problem of an outward swinging door. If the door opens onto the landing, the landing has to be large enough that the swing does not push a chair backward toward the ramp. Planning the door before the ramp is the order that avoids rework.


Edge Protection

Edge protection keeps a caster from rolling off the side of the ramp, and the ADA standard requires it on each side of ramp runs and landings. It offers more than one way to provide it: extending the walking surface at least 12 inches beyond the inside face of the handrail, or fitting a curb or barrier that stops a 4 inch sphere from passing where any part of the sphere is within 4 inches of the surface.

Adding It Up on a Real Footprint

Take a porch 24 inches above the walkway. At the 1:12 slope the ADA standard specifies, the ramp surface is 24 feet. Add a 5 foot landing at the top and a 5 foot landing at the bottom and the straight run needs 34 feet of yard, in a strip at least 4 feet wide once rails are accounted for.
